Leaders and subordinates’ perception in relation to assertiveness in the managerial behavior

Abstract The assertive behavior is that makes a person capable to act in its own interests, to affirm itself without anxiety, to express sincere feelings without embarrassment or to exercise its rights without denying the others one. Assertive behaviors are constantly demanded in the managerial activity, whose effective accomplishment depends on the appropriate combination of relative aspects to the task and of those relative to the form as they relate with the pairs, subordinates or superiors. This study has as objective to identify by means of the self-evaluation the frequency of the assertive performance in the managerial function for leaders and subordinate. A population composed by 201 employees of companies of the interior of São Paulo State answered to the Questionnaire of Managerial Abilities. The preliminary results point for the same index of assertiveness, aggressive and non-assertiveness managerial behavior. The frequency of assertive performance in the managerial function varies with gender, age, function managerial exercise, period in this occupation, and subordinates number. Evaluations of this type are significant to characterize the assertiveness demanded in the exercise of the function, allowing its use either one, selection or in training for managerial positions.
