O Naturalismo em The Open Boat
No conto The Open Boat, Stephen Crane, mostra as características do Naturalismo de uma forma clara, usando uma linguagem simples e coloquial e, é claro, descrevendo de modo detalhista a luta pela sobrevivência de quatro homens no oceano.

“It is just before dawn, and not far off the coast of Florida, between the open sea and the surf, are four men in a dinghy. The ship on which they were sailing sank overnight, and they are the only survivors… They do not have a moment’s peace. The ocean is so rough that one indelicate move will upset the dinghy and send them into the winter waters.”

Já no início do conto podemos observar uma dessas características: O ser humano está condicionado às suas características biológicas (hereditariedade) e ao meio social em que vive e a forte influência do evolucionismo de Charles Darwin.
“Each man, despite not having slept for two days, works tirelessly to keep the boat afloat. The correspondent and the oiler share the work of rowing, while the cook huddles on the floor of the dinghy, bailing water. These men take their direction from the captain.”
Corrobamos na citação acima que os náufragos são de classes sociais distintas e que todos lutam pelo direito igual de se salvarem. Porém, notamos que obedecem ao capitão, que é o mais inteligente de todo o grupo. Assim confirma-se o determinismo hereditário e social (visão darwinista) tanto na classe operária, como na classe média. Todos são fundamentalmente iguais, porém todos sofrem as consequências da lei da seleção natural.
Outra característica do Naturalismo que podemos encontrar no conto é a descrição do homem que é comportamental em relação a determinada situação e a determinado meio.
“... The gulls are at ease on the ocean, so much so that one lands on the captain’s head. The men see this as a sinister, insulting gesture, but the captain cannot swat the bird off because the sudden movement would likely topple the boat.”
