When the Miracle Works
Can you imagine not being able to read this text? Or not be able to listen to your favorite music? In The Miracle Worker by William Gibson, Helen Keller is exactly like that, she’s blind and deaf. But more than that, her family suffer changes during her transformation. James Keller, Captain Arthur Keller and the young Kate Keller changed their personalities in the course of Helen’s learning. In summary, everybody learned something and changed for the better in this real life lesson.
James Keller has difficulties with his father. He provokes his anger, sometimes intentionally and at others unknowingly. Sometimes the “indolent young man” indicates his disapproval of Annie. The conflict between him and the Captain reach at the climax an act two, but in this same act James starts to be more comprehensible with Kate and Annie. And finally in act three he receives his father’s respect, which completely changes the way he acts. What makes the miracle happen with him is starting to have his father’s understanding and it makes Arthur change too.
Captain Keller was, first of all, a very authoritarian man. He seems to understand that Helen needs more discipline but also spoils her, like in the scene when Arthur is feeling sorry for his daughter, gives her candy and cake. In act one the “hearty gentleman in his forties” in not very confident that Annie will be capable to help Helen. But in act two the Captain begins to understand that his stubborn, dominating behavior must change and realizes that Annie could be right and deserves a change to work with the child her way. Like in scene six, when he better understands Annie’s methods and consents to all her demands. And after considering everything. Mr. Keller comes to realize that his attitude towards his son should also be given more consideration. In act three he finally comes to realize that he was wrong about many of his initial assumptions at the beginning of the play. To summarize, the Miracle
