Globalization
Upon us is perhaps the most crucial stage of our species evolution. We are no longer confined by time or space and the possibilities are endless. Yet, many of us do not know what’s happening nor what it is really about, so I should start by explaining what it means. After doing some research I have come up with the following definition: “Globalization is the tendency of businesses, technologies, or philosophies to spread throughout the world or the process of making this happen. The global economy is sometimes referred to as a globality, characterized as a totally interconnected marketplace, unhampered by time zones or national boundaries”.
There is a lot of controversy over globalization with some people arguing in favour and others against. In most cases they are only considering globalization in terms of economy and business. Unemployment in develop countries and exploitation of labour in the developing ones is what first comes to our minds. But we tend to forget that the main reason behind our unemployment rate was the introduction of technology at work as the only way to be competitive when salaries had reached such high levels.
We also tend to forget that it’s better to have a job even if poorly paid than none at all. In the long run, those workers who are now being exploited will become skilled enough to fight for their rights. But, the effects of globalization are felt in other areas which are equally important if not more. To start with, it has led to the need of a global language which has meant a better understanding among people in the world. Through the development of the means of communications, information spreads globally and instantly. It makes it possible to warn people about the approach of natural disasters such as storms, typhoons, earthquake… Help is provided where necessary and the world acts together whenever there is a major disaster. Globalization of information also means the instants spread of knowledge to every corner
