The Suffering for Discovering Breast Cancer: How the Diagnosis is Experienced by the Woman

RESUMO
O estudo teve como objetivo compreender e descrever como a experiência do diagnóstico de câncer de mama é vivida pela mulher. Para compreender a experiência das mulheres optou-se pela realização de uma pesquisa com abordagem qualitativa, tendo como referencial teórico o Interacionismo Simbólico e o Interacionismo Interpretativo como referencial metodológico. Foram realizadas entrevistas com seis mulheres para a obtenção de narrativas biográficas. A análise das narrativas permitiu a identificação de unidades experienciais integradas nos temas: descobrindo-se uma mulher que tem câncer, querendo livrar-se da doença, sendo ajudada para não desistir, tentando adaptar-se à nova identidade. A descrição dos temas possibilitou a compreensão da experiência da mulher no enfrentamento do diagnóstico a partir dos elementos componentes do seu sofrimento: surpresa, medo e aprendizagem. alavras-chave Palavras-chave : neoplasias mamárias, diagnóstico; psicologia; saúde da mulher; ajustamento social.

The purpose of this study was to understand and to describe the experience of breast cancer diagnosis lived by the woman. It was adopted a qualitative approach theoretically based on Symbolic Interactionism under an Interpretive Interacionism methodology. For data collection, interviews were done from 1996 to 1998 with six women, who did biographical narratives. Analysis of the narratives allowed to identify units of experience integrated in different themes: discovering herself as a woman that has cancer, wishing to get rid of the disease, being helped for not give up, trying to adapt herself to the new identity.
