General Description
T
he CALM system comprises a fixed floating buoy, which is anchored to the seabed by an array of anchor chain legs that are attached either to conventional anchors or to piles. One or more elastic mooring hawsers are used to hold the tanker captive to a turntable or a rotating arm, which is mounted on top of the buoy by means of a slewing bearing or a wheel and track assembly.
The slewing bearing or the wheel and track assembly, allows the rotating part to freely rotate through 360 degrees, thus allowing the tanker to weathervane and take up the position of least resistance to the effects of wind, wave and current. The primary purpose of the CALM system is to enable the transfer of fluids between the onshore or offshore facilities and the moored
LEG MOORING BUOY
During this 40 year period, the SBM group of companies have successfully engineered and built in excess of 80% of all the CALM buoys deployed world wide, this concept has been utilised for a wide range of applications, water depths and vessels ranging from small product carriers to the largest ULCCs. Environmentally friendly, this cost-saving “instant port” solution provides a trustworthy system that satisfies most offshore loading and offloading requirements.
