Linda Denmark is not Danish or Portuguese. She is an American, who was born in Vermont, but whose love for Portugal’s art and culture make her to create Porto de Mos, a company that imports hand painted tiles and named after a Portuguese town. The first time Denmark visit Portugal was in 2002. She absorbed and breathed every single portion of Portugal’s culture. “I was impressed with the art quality, the style and the unique of different items,” said Denmark, who has lived in Brockton for seven years. She said she bought pottery and ceramics, a set of ceramic dishes, a piece of lace, a tile and a mural. The floral mural that she acquired at Carlos Alberto Godinho in Mealhada, Portugal, would change her life forever. When she return to the United States she placed the mural into a table and realized the large variety of things one person can do with it. So, she came up with the idea to create her own import tile business. “I had a business card from the business where I bought my mural. I contact them and they took my request and forwarded it to the place where they buy their tiles, which is Mosdecor,” she said. She received Mosdecor catalog with different styles of murals and tiles. By the end of November 2005 her website went up and started importing their tiles. Denmark began calling and sending out marketing postcards to designers, stores and architects. “My first sale was in February 2006 and it was for a costumer in Florida, who is not Portuguese,” said Denmark, who studied import/export at Middlesex Community College. In order to improve and grow her business she started participating at important design shows to get in contact with companies, architects and designers. She also belongs to South Shore Women Business Network, an organization of professionals seeking to grow their business through networking, and to International Furnishings and Design Association, which is a worldwide professional alliance of leaders representing the
