Abstract: The world today works with projects. This could be demonstrated by the number of companies adopting the project management methodology (Kerzner, 2000). Project management is the ability to coordinate activities with the main purpose to satisfy the stakeholders’ expectations. To create capabilities in the formations of work teams became a main worry, as to manage different functions in different perspectives (Frame, 1994). Choosing the correct structure by companies will be decisive in the success of their projects. The organizational structures could appear in different forms: the functional, the pure project, and the matrix weak, balanced and strong (Slack et al., 1996; Verma, 1995; PMBok (2000). Choosing one structure impacts in the authority and in the projects command’ hierarchy (Verzuh, 2000). The main purpose of this work is to identify criterions that will guide the choose of the project management organizational structure of one company, as well as make a parallel with the structures used in practical. Interviews were conducted with the responsible people for project management in Brazilian telecommunications companies. The analysis based on aspects related with the structures characteristics and competencies in project teams. Keywords: Project Management, Organizational Structure, Team Competencies. 1.
