Durabilidade de estruturas de concreto em ambiente marinho: estudo de caso

Abstract
The durability of concrete structures is dependent on a series of requirements for design, construction and maintenance practices. However, these requirements are not an easy task.
For example, the maintenance that must be undertaken regularly and its efficiency depend on the correct selection and implementation of conservation and repair techniques. This paper presents the consequences of an ineffective maintenance practice of two reinforced concrete piers exposed to a marine environment. One of the piers was built recently (New
Pier) and the other one existes for over 40 year (Old Pier). In both piers, pathological manifestations were observed, most of them being investigated in futher testing. In the Old
Pier, the original concrete as well the repaired concrete, frequently presented manifestations related to corrosion of the reinforced steel, a process confirmed by the results of tests of potencial and corrosion rate and the achievement of critical levels of chloride near the bar.
The the New Pier presented construction problems, and it was an early profile of penetration of chlorides in the concrete cover.
