Abstract: The significant improvements of the neonatal intensive care caused a reduction in mortality in babies at risk and, therefore, an increase of their morbity. In order to enlarge the newborn care, many studies have been conducted in recent decades which enhanced the importance of the assessment of child development. This literary review was designed to identify the main instruments for evaluating the development of children at 0 to 2 years old. The databases used were Medline, Lilacs,
Scielo, manuals of the instruments and books in the area of Pediatric Physical Therapy. Articles of intervention, review and works that the age group of children was more than two years old were excluded.
Were identified 15 instruments for assessing the development in the studied age group, published since 1947 to 2000. The knowledge of these scales and tests can help the physiotherapists and researchers who works with the development of children at the first 2 years old, constitute an additional tool during the evaluation process. The choice of this assessment tool must be held in accordance with the needs of each child. It can be used for screening, diagnosis, treatment planning and to monitoring of the effects of therapy.
