1. Histórico
Analysis of two intake valves and two exhaust Customer Cummins received after failing to field due to chordal fractures from radial cracks in seat or head diameter.
According to customer information, were returned to field 11 engines, 7 cases C2423 engine (intake valves) and 4 cases with C2429 engine (exhaust valves) used in Ford trucks.
The table below shows the information received by the customer Cummins about failures, their engines, application, mileage to failure and the production dates of the valves fractured.
All valves fractured in engines with Euro 5 calibration: the engine SO83809-C2429;
b-SO83810 motor C2423.
No failure was observed in engines calibrated to Euro 3 (VW-Man, Agrale, CNH and etc..) Or equivalent to Euro 4 (Komatsu).

It was also informed by the client that Cummins Similar failures occurred in applications Ford in Europe.
2. Conclusion
All valves analyzed due to a fractured radial crack nucleated from thermal cracks nucleated at headquarters or head diameter due to inhomogeneous heating of the valve head.
