Dear John starts in the present day with John watching Savannah from afar and thinking about how much he loves her and why their relationship dissolved. He then takes the reader back in time and narrates the story of their love.
Dear John is about a boy, John, that lives in North Carolina. After high school John enlistes in the army. While home on a leave, John meets Savannah who is in North Carolina doing mission work, she is a college student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is on spring break and is helping build a house for Habitat for Humanity. He meets Savannah Curtis after he dives into the ocean to retrieve Savannah's purse that had fallen off the pier. John joins in with Savannah to help build the house. Along the way a budding romance occurs, and Savannah falls deeply in love with John. As she is about to go back to college, she promises to write John overseas during the next 12-months until he returns to her after completing his enlistment. However they start to drift apart when 9-11 occurs and John is forced to re-enlist in the army.
The Prologue starts of with the ultimate question, "What does it mean to truly love another?"
John as a little kid struggled with finding the balance between himself and his father. In a conversation with Savannah, She mentions that she thinks John's distant father has Asperger's, which would explain why John's dad is distant, and is fairly only interested in his gigantic coin collection. Before he departs, he promises Savannah he'll marry her
