The advanced product quality planning is one of the tools intended to assure that all customers requirements are taking in consideration during the process of development of new products, managing all tasks amongst involved activities in order to guarantee the launch of these products according to pre-scheduled timing, reaching both quality and cost targets, which are often increasing due to global competition. This paper was based on a study of case of a vehicle recently launched, where all parts supplied by outside suppliers which caused problems were identified, and it was performed the analysis of the root causes of these problems and interviews with key participants of the APQP process. To support this study, it was performed a selective review over the process of quality planning adopted by the big three US Original Equipments Manufactures (Daimler-Chrysler, Ford e General Motors), known as advanced product quality planning – APQP. It is also described the updates and improvements introduced by General Motors
Corporation, on this process, called global advanced product quality planning (Global APQP), and the relationship of
Global APQP and General Motors’s global vehicle development process (GVDP).
