“CACHAÇA FROM MINAS’ AND THE RURAL DEVELOPMENT: AN ANALYSIS OF
THE COOPERATIVISM AS AN IMPULSE TO THE AGRO-BUSINESS
The aim of this article is to present a panorama of the agro-business of cachaça in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil with emphasis on the impact of the production of this drink on the generation of income and jobs for rural workers from Minas Gerais. The changes which happened in this sector in the last years have been broadening the potential market and diversifying the target public of the “Cachaça de Minas” , mainly concerning the exportation. At the moment, the production of the genuine homemade cachaça represents one of the main segments of agriculture in Minas Gerais, creating approximately 115.000 direct jobs and about 400.000 other jobs throughout the production process, accumulating an annual income of R$1.4 billion. The article also brings a comparison of the importance of the production of Cachaça de Minas in the small rural worker´s income formation.
