FIDAS
The Foundation for the Research and Diffusion of Architecture in Seville, (FIDAS) arises by an initiative of the Official College of Architects of Seville. The Foundation was created in order to develop and divulge Architecture in Andalusia, trying to combine the efforts of public and private institutions related with the architectural world and the professional exercise. To attain its objectives of research, consult and diffusion, several activities will be developed in different areas, that is, Technology, Regulation and Legislation, Culture and History of the Architecture, and Urbanism and Environment.
Finnish Pavilion Architecture Competition, 1989, First Prize. Author: The group of monumental art and architecture MONARK, formed by Juha Jaaskelainen, Juha Kaakko, Petri Rouhiainen, Matti Sanaksenaho, and Jari Tirkkonen. They were all students of Architecture. The Finnish State valued especially that the pavilion was dedicated as headquarters of the FIDAS Foundation, being that way a guarantee that the pavilion would be well preserved.
The pavilion is made up of two opposed buildings: Kone (machine) made of steel, and the wooden KOLI (keel), with the throat Helvetinkolu (the Throat of the Hell) connecting them. The buildings are connected together by a bridge across Helvetinkolu which led directly from one exhibition area to the other, during the EXPO'92, and the visitors had access from the exterior to the exhibition area level through a stepped ramp.
The steel machine, KONE, in black, represents a striving forward, a new age, but perhaps also in its reserve, a troublesome uncertainty in the face of a future full of changes. KOLI, sweet and feminine, is the opposed face of KONE. Traditional and resistant is the one who gives the soul to the sculptural unity of the pavilion. The indoor space KOLI - the belly of the whale - with its untreated wooden surfaces, is a space seeking security and the peace from the outer noises.
