There are a lot of individuals now a days with
Diabetes, not only elderly put also young individuals. So as future nurses we should be able to give information on the best diet for a diabetic individual.
It is a Chronic change of glucose in the metabolism. An increase of glucose in the blood (glycemic) associated with a decrease in intracellular glucose available, due to a deficit or
a decrease in insulin sensitivity. About 4% of the world population is diabetic.
The diabetes diet corresponds essentially to a normal balanced diet, which is also desirable for
the individuals health.
The diet should cover the nutritional and caloric needs of the patient. The amount of calories needed depends of sex, age, profession and lifestyle, including leisure
activity's .
They should: Eat more starches such as bread, cereal, and starchy vegetables. Aim for six servings a day or more. For example, have cold cereal with nonfat milk or a bagel with a teaspoon of jelly for breakfast. Another starch-adding strategy is to add cooked black beans, corn or garbanzo beans to salads or casseroles.
Eat five fruits and vegetables every day. Have a piece of fruit or two as a snack, or add vegetables to chili, stir-fried dishes or stews.
Eat sugars and sweets in moderation. And also include favorite sweets in the diet once or twice a week at most.
The Diabetics should drink a lot of water.
The ideal drinks should be:
Mineral water
Teas (Herbal) Coffee without sugar
Alcoholic beverages containing too much sugar should NOT be consumed.
Sweetener = Replacement sugar
Sugar is forbidden for diabetics
The replacement sugar/sweeteners are both recommended for diabetics and non diabetics
