THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE FIRM: FOUR SWEDISH CASES O artigo The Internationalization Process: Four Swedish Cases foi escrito em 1975 por Jan Johanson e Finn Wiedersheim-Paul, membros do corpo docente da Universidade de Uppsala. Este artigo, em que se avaliou o processo de internacionalização de quatro empresas suecas (Sandvik, Atlas Copco, Facit e Volvo), serviu de base para o desenvolvimento da teoria de internacionalização conhecida como Teoria de Uppsala. Para os autores, o processo de decisão de internacionalizar uma empresa é gradual, e as barreiras que impedem o seu avanço são, em geral, limitações de conhecimento. A tomada de decisão deve ser baseada na experiência que se tem, tanto teórica quanto prática. Os administradores toleram um determinado grau de incerteza em suas decisões, mas a incerteza impõe que a internacionalização tende a começar em níveis mais básicos de trocas, como ao utilizar-se de agentes terceirizados para venda dos produtos em outro mercado desconhecido. Ainda que lentamente, a necessidade de expansão de mercado aliado ao fluxo de informações que o empresário recebe ao iniciar o processo de internacionalização oferece a opção de aumentar a participação internacional segura e gradual.
