Child labour restricts young people’s ambitions for their working life
O trabalho infantil limita as ambições profissionais dos jovens
In July 2002, statistics reveal that child labour has declined in comparison with 1998, but is still significant in the textiles, footwear, agriculture and domestic labour sectors. Northern Portugal has the highest levels, with the proliferation of types of child labour that are difficult to control, namely the forms that take place within the family or are encouraged by it, in particular in audio-visual activities. The average number of hours worked per day may not be very high but entering the job market too early reduces children’s ambitions with regard to the projects they have for their working life and their qualifications. Public authorities called attention to the need to work together, in partnership, to ensure that the fight is more effective. The government regards this as a priority area, along with the fight against early school-leaving, given that the two phenomena are linked.
