Este artigo apresenta aspectos relativos as competências essenciais necessárias ao exercício da docência. A partir de uma reflexão decorrente das idéias de autores que tratam do tema Para fundamentar a pesquisa foi realizado um estudo de caso na Faculdade da Cidade do Salvador, tendo por sujeito da pesquisa docentes, discentes e egressos do curso superior de Design de Produto. Como resultado concluiu-se que as competências essenciais ao exercício da docência são encaradas de forma diferente pelos sujeitos da pesquisa, mas a dissonância è pequena, entre o que è ofertado pelos professores e o que os alunos requerem. Concluiu-se ainda que as instituições de ensino propõem o aperfeiçoamento do seu corpo docente, entretanto, há a necessidade de aumentarem este investimento, em modo especial, na formação continuada, de que não há como estabelecer um conjunto único e universal de competências necessárias e que sim,o professor tem um compromisso social com a educação.

Abstract: This paper presents aspects related to the core competencies needed to carry out teaching. The result from a reflection of the ideas of authors who treat the theme to support the survey was conducted a case study at the College of the City of Salvador, with the subject of the research faculty, students and graduates of the college of Product Design. As a result it was concluded that the essential skills to carry out teaching are viewed differently by the subjects, but the small è dissonance between what is offered by teachers and students require. It was also concluded that the educational institutions propose the improvement of the teaching staff, however, there is a need to increase this investment, in particular, the continuing education, that there is no way to establish a single set of universal skills and so, the teacher has a social commitment to education.
