Food Nutr., São Paulo, SP, v. 34, n. 1, p. 199-209, abr. 2009. The aging of a human being is a natural biological process rather than a pathologic one, characterized by a series of morpho-physiological, biochemical and psychological changes that take place throughout the lives of human beings. The influence of the aging process on the nutritional requirements is the object of many studies that were carried out in order to determine the adequate intake of nutrients to meet the requirements of the healthy elderly population. Elderly people should intake proteins in sufficient quantity to reduce the loss of muscle mass related to aging. However, the high intake of this nutrient might represent some undesirable effects to the health of elderly people, due to kidney and liver problems. This paper reviews some articles on protein requirements for the elderly and dietary studies in the elderly population related to protein intake, using the PubMed Database, in a search period between 1978 and 2003. The keywords used were: amino acids, protein recommendation, metabolism, elderly. Keywords: Aging. Protein requirements. Nutrition. Elderly.
