Abstract: The plasma spray technique appears as a process to produce a good coating with the aim of protecting the material against wear, high temperature and corrosion. This process is broadly used for recovering blade gas turbine and as coating for piston rings.
The quality of the process can be defined based on two main characteristics: adherence and porosity. These characteristics are related to the morphology, chemical composition and process parameters. In this piece of work the powder/coating morphology and chemical composition were analyzed via Scanning Electron Microscopy/ Energy
Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Four powders were used: METCO 43C-NS, 45C-NS,
82VF-NS e Amperit MC42. The coatings were deposited onto a circular disc of AISI 304.
During the deposition the follow process parameters were kept constant: voltage/current, number of layers, powder flow rate, distance gun/substrate, substrate roughness. Hardness tests were also carried out. The SEM-EDS results permit to affirm that the powder
METCO 82VF-NS produces coating with the best adherence. This can be explained by the grain size and chemical composition. The METCO 82VF-NS is the one, which presents the highest percentage of nickel. It also has favoured the adherence for the type of coating.
