Jamaica is officially known as Commonwealth of Jamaica, is the 4th largest island nation of the Greater Antilles (one of the island groups in the Caribbean).
The indigenous Arawakan-speaking Taíno name for the island was “Xaymaca” meaning the "Land of Wood and Water" or the "Land of Springs".
Once a Spanish possession known as Santiago, it became an English colony and later British in 1655 under the name Jamaica.
It achieved full independence from the United Kingdom on August 6, 1962.
It is the third most populous country in the Americas, after The United States an Canada.
Kingston is the capital and the country’s largest city with a total population of 937700 persons.
Queen Elizabeth II is the constitutional monarch of the Commonwealth realms; therefore she is Queen of Jamaica and Head of State.
Her appointed representative in the country is the Governor-General of Jamaica, Sir Patrick Allen.
Jamaica is divided into 14 parishes which are grouped in three historic counties.
The three historic counties are:

-Middlesex County
-Cornwall County
The Jamaica Defense Force (JDF) is the small but professional military force of Jamaica.
The JDF is based on the British military model with organization, training, weapons and traditions closely aligned with Commonwealth realms.
Once chosen, officer candidates are sent to one of several British or Canadian basic officer courses depending on which arm of service they are selected for.
