Biorremediação

Oil is an important promoter of social and economic progress of a nation to the point that having it in abundance is a synonym of wealth and prosperity. However, the intensive activity of production, transportation, handling and marketing of it has affected the chemical, physical and biological integrity of many ecosystems, considering its toxicity. Soil contamination by this substance may affect its use, contaminate underground aquifers, intoxicate the indigenous biota, harming the health of communities and ecosystems nearby and commit related economic activities. Because of this, bioremediation, a set of procedures that employ biotechnology microorganisms degrading xenobiotic compounds to decompose them and turn them into harmless substances, has been gaining notoriety in recent decades, because of its economic viability and the results it has provided during remediation of hydrocarbons impacted ecosystems. Through the collection of data from published studies, this article presents a brief contextualization of Environmental Impacts, as well as the principal techniques of bioremediation, its peculiarities and application in the recovery and decontamination of soils contaminated by oil.
