RECIFE, APRIL 1ST, 1964: THE STUDENT’S MARCH AGAINST THE
DEPOSITION OF THE GOVERNOR MIGUEL ARRAES

RESUMO:
O presente artigo pretende analisar o Golpe Militar no estado de Pernambuco e a deposição do governador Miguel Arraes através da passeata organizada pelos estudantes no dia primeiro de abril de 1964, que tinha como objetivo apoiar o dirigente popular na defesa da legalidade do seu mandato. As lideranças desta manifestação estudantil, Ivan Rocha Aguiar e Jonas José de
Albuquerque Barros, foram mortos no confronto e são as primeiras vítimas fatais da Ditadura
Civil Militar no nosso estado. Através do resgate da memória e da valorização da História do
Tempo Presente, busca-se discutir a deflagração da “intervenção militar” em Pernambuco bem como o contexto que ele estava inserido.

ABSTRACT:
The present article intends to analyse the Military Coup at the state of Pernambuco and the deposition of the governor Miguel Arraes through the march organized by the students on
April 1st, 1964, which aimed support the popular chief with the legal defense of his term of office. The leaders of this student’s manifestation, Ivan Rocha Aguiar and Jonas José de
Albuquerque Barros, were killed at the confrontation and are the first fatal victims of the Civil
Military Dictatorship at our state. By the memory’s recue and the valorization of the Present
Time History, I seek to discuss the “military intervention’s” deflagration at Pernambuco as also the context in which it was inserted.
