MAYOMBE: A NARRATIVE OF WAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ANGOLAN
INDEPENDENCE

RESUMO: este artigo trata da relação entre literatura e história em Mayombe, de Pepetela
(cujo nome verdadeiro é Arthur Maurício Pestana dos Santos), que através de um romance de anti-heróis busca retratar anos de angústia, resistência e dor do povo africano – embrenhado na mata na luta contra um inimigo comum: o povo português. Porém, o autor irá denunciar que esse ideal comum se confunde com objeções particulares de cada militante que representa a nação. Este breve artigo tratará da história de Angola, da composição da obra e da vida de seu autor, que por meio de fragmentações de personagens compõe sua própria experiência de guerrilheiro na luta pela libertação.

ABSTRACT: this article discusses the relationship between literature and history in
Mayombe, from Pepetela (whose real name is Arthur Mauricio Pestana dos Santos), that through an anti-hero novel seeks to represent years of anguish, pain and resistance of
African people – ingrained in the woods to fight a common enemy: the Portuguese people.
However, the author reports that this common ideal is confused with individual objections of each activist who represents the nation. This brief article addresses the history of
Angola, the composition of the work and the life of the author, that through the fragmentation of characters composes his own experience as a guerrilla fighter in the liberation struggle.
