Abstract. The Geo, specifically remote sensing can contribute to the identification and mapping of coastal ecosystems. This study aims to use digital imaging to map mangroves in part of the coastal of the Territory of Identity “Baixo Sul” of the Bahia State. It aims also to evaluate the use of free tools - Spring software and Landsat 7-ETM images distributed by INPE – to the proposed mapping. The following steps were used to process digital images (bands 4, 5 and 7): contrast enhancement; RGB-IHS transformation, color composition, segmentation, classification (Bhattacharya). After checking the preliminary mapping in the field, it was edited to correct the mapping, and a thematic map was finally prepared on Scarta software. In the study area were mapped 145.28 km² of mangroves, 7.58 km² of shrimp and 8.93 km² of urban area mainly represented by the city of Valencia. The results demonstrated that the application of Geo contributed to the identification of coastal ecosystems withspeed and low cost.
