He lived most of his childhood in Ilheus, which served as inspiration for numerous novels. He studied Law Faculty of the then University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ actual). During the 1930s, the college was a center of political discussions and art, and there caught his first contacts with organized communist movement. He was a journalist, and became involved with ideological politics, becoming communist. His works are some of the most significant of modern Brazilian fiction with 49 books, literature focused on proposing a national roots. In 1945, he was elected congressman from the Brazilian Communist Party. He was married Zelia Gattai, also a
