As palavras acima são palavras cognatas. Elas têm a mesma origem (geralmente Latina ou Anglo-saxônica) e, portanto, são escritas de uma forma semelhante em diferentes idiomas.
Existem muitas palavras como estas, com a escrita em Inglês muito semelhante à escrita em Português. Isto nos ajuda muito, tanto na comunicação como na compreensão, pois podemos ter uma ideia de o que uma palavra em Inglês significa, mesmo que seja a primeira vez que a encontramos.
