Abstract. Drainage networks and watershed delimitation are key information for the correct management and operation planning of water reservoirs, both for water supply as for energy production. These information are sometimes hardly available and serious problems may arise if incorrect data is used. Topographic data derived from orbital sensors, as SRTM images, may be useful to obtain this information in a fast and low cost basis. This work was carried out in the Jundiai reservoir, NE of São Paulo State. Delimitation of drainage network and watershed were automatically accomplished using SRTM data. Watershed limits obtained in such way were compared with a digital limit which was supplied by SABESP and with a limit which was manually drawn based in level curves with 30 meters of equidistance. The results suggest that SRTM data are appropriate for this sort of work. Watershed limits obtained from those data show a high degree of similarity with limits manually drawn based in level curves. The limits that were supplied by SABESP shown significant differences with the two other limits and appeared to be incorrect according with drainage network.
