Abstract. The present work aims to describe and represent cartographically the environmental quality of the
Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs) in the Campus do Vale (UFRGS) surroundings, as defined by micro watershed. The methodology consists of building a GIS database, including a wide range of spatial information.
The PPAs delimitation is based on the Brazilian environmental law, more specifically on the Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente (CONAMA) resolutions. The data needed to make the PPAs map are the Digital Elevation
Model (DEM), the hydrography and the land use and cover map, the latter produced by digital interpretation of the image of the QuickBird satellite. Based on this information and GIS procedures, PPAs were spatially defined, and comprise certain land cover types, hilltops, high slope areas, and the margin of water bodies and of their sources. The crosstabulation between the PPAs map and the land use and cover map give us a hint of where conflictive use of the space occurs. The crosstabulated map can be understood as an indicator of PPAs environmental quality and failures in governmental and public policy. Fortunately, the Campus do Vale territory is in agreement to the environmental law, as opposed to its surrounds, where the PPAs are quite degraded.
