Abstract
The low cost, simplicity of installation, easy operation and maintenance made Ethernet very popular. About 95% of Internet traffic is generated by Ethernet interfaces. During its 27 years, this technology evolved very much.
This work evaluates some events on its evolution from 10Mb/s standards until the next 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard.
The full-duplex operation mode does not have the shared physical media access control protocol problems. The only distance constrains are the physical media characteristics. The LAN switched technology made the network design very flexible.
The Link Aggregation method allows bandwidth increase between Ethernet equipments by aggregating links of the same kind. It increases the link resilience. If one link of the aggregated link group fails, the packets of this link are routed to the other links of the group.
The 10 Gigabit Ethernet networks will support 10Gb/s and a 40km link distance. It is a full-duplex only and fiber only technology.
The Ethernet networks now, will be in the wide area networks market with substantial value over traditional networks as it is not necessary the bandwidth-consuming conversion between Ethernet packets and other technology frames. The combination with IP with its traffic engineering, traffic priorization, bandwidth reservation mechanisms will make possible to create convergence between voice, video and data services.
