Short story writer , essayist and translator, this great name of Brazilian literature was born in Taubaté , São Paulo , in 1882 .
He was the son of Joseph Benedict and Olympia Augusto Marcondes Lobato Lobato. His real name was José Renato Monteiro Lobato, but in 1893 the author chose to adopt the name of his father for wanting to use a cane containing the father's fist initial JBML.

A law graduate , he served as prosecutor to become farmer, after receiving inheritance left by his grandfather . Facing a new lifestyle, Lobato began publishing his first stories in newspapers and magazines , and later met a number of them in Urupes , masterpiece of this famous writer .
In a time when the Brazilian books were published in Paris or Lisbon, Monteiro Lobato also became editor , going to edit books in Brazil too . With that, he deployed a series of renovations in textbooks and children's books .
This remarkable writer is quite known among children as it was dedicated to a writing style with simple language where reality and fantasy are side by side . You could say he was the precursor of children's literature in Brazil .
