The real life avatar
A fanatic Palmeiras soccer team supporter is considered by Scientific American magazine one of the most world-renowned scientists. Keep this name in mind: Miguel Angelo Laporta Nicolelis, a Brazilian genius bound to win a Nobel Prize in the near future.
Not only is Nicolelis a doctor graduated at Sao Paulo University (USP) but also a General Physiology PhD. Living in the US for more than 22 years, he teaches organs physiology at Duke University (Durham).
He unfolded an important behaviour of the human brain: in case of injuries (eg: when someone loses vision), the brain is able to remap its cells to make possible for them to take new functions. “It’s like a symphony, a brain symphony”, says Nicolelis during an interview to Jo Soares, a Brazilian TV presenter. “Each note played by a cell always changes the whole orchestra, turning it into a peculiar symphony”. In other words, if something happens to a single brain cell, the whole brain suffers a change.
During his last successful and astonishing experience, there was a monkey in the US imagining that it was walking. Its brain was connected to sensors in order to capture its brain waves and transmit to a robot located, literally, on the other side of the world - Kyoto (Japan). Through those “commands”, the robot began to walk instantaneously. “It’s just like an avatar experience, where the brain is separated from its body”, summarizes Nicolelis.
His most recent research involves the creation of a neural prosthesis for the rehabilitation of patients who suffer from cerebral palsy due to degenerative diseases or spinal cord injury. He’s developing a cutting-edge armor able
