ABSTRACT: The present study has as its aim the characterization of the growth rings from araucaria trees applying the X-ray microdensitometric method . Araucaria trees of 3 diameter categories - dominated, co-dominated and suppressed - with 25 years, were cutted of a plantation from this species located, in Arapoti, Paraná State, Brazil. Wood discs were also collected at the below part of the stem, near the ground, and prepared to take X-rays films to be analyzed in the microdensitometer. The purchase results allowed: (i) evaluate the mean value of the densities of the maximum, minimum and mean of the tree growth rings; (ii) determine the width variation and the early and latewood density; (iii) obtain the wood mean density. In this study were discussed the results with those ones presented in the literature about araucaria, with other methodologies of tree ring growth ring analysis and wood quality parameters.

RESUMO: O presente trabalho teve como objetivo a caracterização dos anéis de crescimento de árvores de araucária através da técnica de microdensitometria de raios X. Árvores de araucária pertencentes a 3 classes de diâmetro - dominantes, co-dominantes e dominadas - com 25 anos, foram cortadas de uma plantação, localizada no município de Arapoti, PR. Foram coletados discos de madeira na região basal do tronco e preparados para a obtenção de filmes de raios X e análise por microdensitômetro.
