SÃO FRANCISCO DE ASSIS, A COMÉDIA DE DANTE E A
INTERPRETAÇÃO FIGURAL

Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ [e-mail] RESUMO: A vida de São Francisco de Assis deu origem a muitos relatos hagiográficos, inúmeras imagens e serviu de inspiração para diversos movimentos místico-religiosos. A popularidade do santo rendeu-lhe, inclusive, uma aparição n‟A Divina Comédia, de Dante Alighieri, na qual é representada uma trajetória biográfica do Poverello assisense, desenvolvida através de uma alegoria medieval. O filólogo alemão Erick Auerbach lançou mão de tal alegoria em alguns de seus estudos sobre o esquema de interpretação figural. Assim sendo, o objetivo deste artigo é discutir como as primeiras hagiografias de
São Francisco construíram, a partir desse esquema, uma imagem do santo como consumação da figura de
Cristo, de acordo com as discussões desenvolvidas por Auerbach, em Mimesis (1946) e em outros de seus ensaios sobre o tema.

ABSTRACT: The life of St. Francis of Assisi gave rise to many hagiographic narratives, countless images and inspiration for many mystical-religious movements. The saint's popularity earned him an appearance in The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, at which is represented a biographical trajectory of the Poverello of Assisi, developed through a medieval allegory. The German philologist Eric Auerbach has used this allegorical representation of Francis‟s life in some of his studies on the scheme of figural interpretation. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss how the early hagiographies of St.
Francis built from this scheme an image of the saint as the consummation of the figure of Christ, according to the discussions held by Auerbach in Mimesis (1946) and others of his essays on the subject.
