RESUMO
A amamentação representa uma das etapas mais relevantes do período reprodutivo da mulher e sua realização promove uma série de benefícios tanto para mãe como para a criança. Dentro desta perspectiva, o objetivo do presente estudo foi apresentar todo perfil do aleitamento materno exclusivo para saúde da criança nos primeiros meses de vida, relatando os principais benefícios desta prática, os principais componentes do leite materno, o modo correto da amamentação e os fatores que acarretam o desmame precoce. O estudo foi realizado através de uma revisão bibliográfica, com informações contidas nas principais revistas de acesso gratuito, indexadas nas plataformas SciELO, LILACS, MEDLINE e BIREME. PALAVRAS-CHAVES: aleitamento materno; amamentação; desamame precoce; e componentes do leite materno.

Breastfeeding is one of the most important stages of the reproductive period of women and their realization promotes a range of benefits for both mother and child.
