Review of Knowledge Management Concepts and Techniques
Abstract
The intent of this document is to provide a review of knowledge management concepts and to familiarize the reader with the techniques employed for knowledge management. The review is primarily based on the literature research by the author. The knowledge sharing initiative at Avid Solutions was the primary motivation for the research.
The general concepts of knowledge management are presented with a slight focus on knowledge intensive service industries (like Avid Solutions). The paper starts with a brief introduction of knowledge management. It then proceeds with an attempt to classify knowledge in explicit, implicit and tacit categories. Next some challenges for knowledge management are presented. The following section covers some tools utilized in knowledge management. The paper then concludes summarizing the approach and the framework for implementing a knowledge management system.
Introduction
Knowledge Management (KM) comprises a range of strategies and practices used in an organization to identify, create, represent, distribute, and enable adoption of insights and experiences. Such insights and experiences comprise knowledge, either embodied in individuals or embedded in organizational processes or practice (1).
Effective management of knowledge in the organization can provide a competitive edge and be a major differentiating factor. The statement is especially true with regard to knowledge intensive service firms (consulting, engineering etc.). For such firms effective knowledge sharing means reduced project execution time through design reuse, efficient project management, less repetition of costly mistakes, better risk management, effective personnel development and development of core competencies of the firm.
The positive relationship of the effect of KM process on project management has also been studied by the method of questionnaire surveys on few industries (2). The study rebuts
