POPULAÇÃO E ESPAÇO RURAL NUM GRANDE CENTRO URBANO: O CASO DE CAMPINAS

The present study seeks to analyze the transformation of land use and of population and the impact of this transformation on the urbanization of rural areas, considering the lack of association between rurality and agriculture. The research focuses on Campinas, in São Paulo, a particularly well-developed region, where the urban process is more advanced.
The research seeks to understand the social and spatial configuration of this contemporary rurality and, at the same time, to examine the domestic arrangements adopted by the families to achieve their social livelihood. The households were defined as agricultural, non-agricultural, and pluriactive, according to the main occupation of its economically active members. A diversity of arrangements was found in all situations, which were caused by a variety of factors such as family life cycle, occupation and place of work (town or country), and so on.
A comparison is made between characteristics of the population resident in rural and urban areas, to verify whether the recent transformation points to a homogenization of the population of Campinas. In another words, the study aims to investigate whether the changes are interfering in the living conditions of this population, to the point of becoming indistinct.
Another aspect studied is the importance of the rural territory as an alternative for development in the future. Simultaneously, considering the growing process of urbanization, the question is, Will the rural environment disappear or not in this region? According to official data, and also through empirical observation, there are limits and difficulties in the traditional classifications of rural and urban, as well as in the rural/urban dichotomy
