RESUMO: A obra de Marcel Mauss (1872-1950) não somente redimensionou a maneira como “olhar” e compreender “o outro”, mas, sobretudo, foi capaz de demonstrar de que modo, através da análise dos fatos sociais, a totalidade de uma cultura pode ser revelada.
Este é justamente o motivo pelo qual este trabalho ganha impulso. Sua proposta constituise em discorrer sobre a noção de fato social total, tomando como suporte analítico alguns textos do próprio autor. Trata-se de fazer um excurso sobre como tal noção foi sendo paulatinamente construída durante as reflexões de Mauss sobre a vida em sociedade. Isso poderá contribuir para revelar alguns aspectos da trajetória intelectual deste autor e, por conseguinte, o amadurecimento de suas idéias.
ABSTRACT: Marcel Mauss’ work has redefined the way one “sees” and understands
“the other” but above all he has been able to show how a specific culture could be uncovered as a whole by means of the analysis of social facts. The main goal of this paper is to discuss the total social fact, which is an important theme proposed by Marcel Mauss. Our analysis will be based on some relevant Marcel Mauss’ essays and will try to explain how that notion was gradually constructed by the author during his reflections about social life.
We hope this can contribute to highlighting some of Marcel Mauss’ academic life and consequently the development of his ideas.
