Surfing
There are 17 million recreational surfers in the world including 2.4 million in Brazil, which ranks second in international surfing, right after the U.S. The Confederação Brasileira de Surfe (Brazilian Surfing
Confederation - CBS) has 536 registered athletes (440 amateurs e
96 professionals), who are role models to the young population of the country. In Florianópolis-SC, a large beach city in the South of
Brazil, for example, there is one surfer in each group of 20 inhabitants.
Brazilian surfing has been taken up by diverse social-sporting-cultural segments and has even become a lifestyle for population groups

that do not even go surfing. The sport is indeed on the rise in number of aficionados, moving a powerful industry that already manufactures products that are 100% Brazilian. Modern surf boards began to be developed in 1940s in California, U.S. The modern surfboard is hand shaped by professional shapers out of foam and finished with a fiberglass coat, which has promoted great technical evolution of the sport and has made it even more popular. Osmar Gonçalves made by hand the very first surf board in Brazil in 1938. Brazilian surfing began to grow in the 1960s through competitions and the local

manufacturing of surf boards. The Brazilian participation in international events and the publication of the first surfing magazines started in the 1970s. In the late 1980s there were already 13 magazines and newspapers specialized in surfing in Brazil, which also assumed leadership in international surfing competitions together with the U.S. and Australia. Women started surfing in the early
1980s and have founded the Associação Brasileira de Surfe Feminino
(Brazilian Female Surfing Association-ABSF), which has today 300 registered athletes.
