Refletindo sobre a questão das transfusões de sangue para as testemunhas de Jeová a partir do debate político contemporâneo

Abstract

Members of the religious community of Jehovah’s Witnesses normally refuse to accept blood transfusion. This stance generates at least two political and ethical dilemmas that public managers and health professionals have to cope with daily. The first dilemma is related to the limits of the individuals' freedom of choice. Sometimes it's impossible to promote an alternative treatment and the person refuses the transfusion. Should the State respect this person's liberty of choice? The second dilemma is related to the distribution of health resources. State resources are limited and we can assume that, even if alternative medical treatments in more developed centers are possible, those normally are more expensive than blood transfusion. If it's possible, should the State offer these alternative treatments to Jehovah’s Witnesses? Put those dilemmas, this essay will seek to identify, in the contemporary political debate about the respect of different cultures within a society, the bases of the answers to the dilemmas proposed.

Introdução

As Testemunhas de Jeová - cristãos com uma interpretação da Bíblia bastante distinta da realizada por Católicos e Protestantes - acreditam que as transfusões de sangue, sob qualquer hipótese, são inaceitáveis. Segundo a interpretação das Testemunhas de Jeová, há, na Bíblia, uma série de referências sugerindo que devamos nos abster de sangue, pois esse representa a própria alma do ser que lhe deu origem e, portanto, não pode ser consumido (entendem eles que uma transfusão é um tipo de consumo do sangue).1 Por essa razão, membros dessa comunidade, se realizarem tal procedimento de forma voluntária, são excomungados. Tal postura gera pelo menos dois dilemas éticos e políticos enfrentados diariamente por gestores públicos e por profissionais de saúde.
