Grande do Sul using Geoprocessing and remote sensing/ detection. The area of this study is located between the cities of Rio Grande and Santa Vitória do Palmar. There were performed specific classification techniques of non-supervised orbital images from the sensor Landsat TM 5 using the tool SOM (Kohenen’s Self-Organizing
Map) from the software Idrisi Selva®, making it possible to discuss the spectral answers of the targets and of the field observation. Based on the distinction of classes performed by the software it was possible to make theme maps to analyze and measure the prevailing spots in the landscape classifying them according to their characteristics. The prevailing classes are the ones of use of soil where it is included rural areas of farming, plantation, livestock, and also forestry, thus demonstrating the need of a planning in order to regulate the use and conservation of the soil considering that the mentioned area is the target of intensive action of growth, and expansion of the
