Theme: The Four different kind of Marriage PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

The nineteenth century in Southern England was an important period in the way that people related to each other, particularly in terms of marriage and the role women had in society. In general, women didn´t have the chance to choose with whom they would marry. On the other hand, the women didn´t have equal rights in society. The man´s voice was most important in that age, then the woman´s voice. Moreover, the general idea was that the woman´s place was at home, taking care of the house and family. Nowadays, women are respected in society and have the possibility to choose with whom to marry. In her work, Pride and Prejudice, novelist Jane Austen wrote about a specific area of England and bout the families that lived on a farm, which reflected an isolated part of England. We notice different perspectives of marriage in that time. In this paper, I will bring you a general idea of marriage in Jane Austen´s novel from a different point of view highlighting the main marriages and how they happened in the novel. The first one is about Charlotte Lucas who married Mr. Collins because she was interested in his money and a stabilized life. The same happened with Lydia and Wickham who married each other for a dowry. On the other hand, there were two marriages based on love. One was Mr. Darcy´s and Elizabeth´s marriage. The other was among Mr. Bingley and Jane. It is possible to divide marriage in four categories in the novel Pride
