Resumo
Objetivou a estudar o processo de ensino da leitura e escrita em pessoas classificadas deficientes intelectuais. Para tanto se apresentou a história da educação dessas pessoas ao longo da história do ensino da escrita às pessoas com deficiência intelectual. As concepções de deficiência revelam o entendimento a respeito da sociedade e do homem ao longo dos anos. A preocupação com a apropriação da leitura e escrita também revelam os valores sociais de cada período. Houve preocupação com os métodos de ensino e atualmente há a preocupação para que as pessoas utilizem a leitura e a escrita aprendida na escola em suas práticas sociais.

Abstract
The study of the teaching process in reading and writing in intellectually-deficient people is provided. The educational history of the above-mentioned people throughout the history of the teaching of writing to people with intellectual deficiency is also given and ideas on deficiency reveal its understanding by society and peoples. Concern on the appropriation of reading and writing also reveal the social values of each period. Once there was a great concern in teaching methods whereas today there is a preoccupation so that people use reading and writing learned in school for social practices.
