This article is part of a bigger work, financed by CNPq, which is being accomplished at Universidade Federal de São Carlos, aimed to the development of an integrated management model for smallholder agriculture in São Carlos. Specifically, the principal aim of this article is to propose a generic systemic structure that may aid the comprehension and the understanding of a rural firm working, thus helping the rural entrepreneurs to take decisions. Through an empirical study, it was possible to understand the production system of a group of rural properties and evaluate a diagnosis on those properties’ management. The most relevant (fundamental) variables directing a rural firm were identified, as well as the inter-relations among them. Based on a systemic approach, it was elaborated a conceptual model that represents and facilitates the comprehension of a rural firm working. This model reveals the interdependency among the management modules, such as: production planning, quality, cost, financial resources, marketing, trading and human resource.
