RESUMO: No final do século XII Império e Igreja se indispuseram quanto à questão das investiduras. Esse conflito que parecia mera querela entre duas instituições de poder, se aprofundou nos dois séculos seguintes, com a discussão da plenitude do poder do pontífice. O debate, então, circunscreveu-se ao tema da soberania. À legitimidade e fonte da autoridade. Seu alcance jurisdicional, assim como à noção de lei, de direitos e o caráter sacramental da sociedade política. Neste cenário de controvérsias e atritos, Dante se colocou como um dos mais proeminentes interlocutores, expondo sua doutrina política no tratado Da Monarquia, onde defendeu com tenacidade a ideia de um império universal, pois o Imperador era a única autoridade capaz de unificar a Europa e levar a paz ao Continente.
