ZONA RURAL PRÓXIMA A INDÚSTRIA METALÍFERA
Cattle intoxication by lead in the rural area nearby a metal industry

RESUMO
A partir do óbito de uma vaca leiteira, bovinos remanescentes de surto de saturnismo foram utilizados para se avaliar a poluição ambiental ocasionada por uma indústria metalífera, numa localidade rural no estado do Paraná. Os animais eram criados nas circunvizinhanças de uma fábrica produtora de grande quantidade de baterias para veículos automotores. Análises laboratoriais da água de beber, solo, capim e sal mineral foram efetuadas para se investigar as fontes de toxidez aos animais. Um total de 25 animais foi monitorado através dos exames clínicos e análises hematológicas, para se investigar a presença de chumbo inorgânico, considerado como elemento metálico prioritário e/ou essencial na manufatura de baterias automotivas.
Os resultados demonstraram haver comprometimento da saúde dos animais pela poluição ambiental nos efluentes industriais líquidos e gasosos incorporados às pastagens e fontes de água.

Cattle were used to evaluate the environmental pollution caused by a metal industry in a rural area of
Paraná, State, Brazil. Laboratory analyses of the water, soil, grass and mineral salt were done to investigate the source of the animal’s toxicity. Twenty five (25) animals, that lived in the neighborhood of an industry for motor vehicles’ batteries, were monitored by clinical examination and hematological analyses to investigate inorganic lead presence in their organism; since lead is the major metallic element used in the manufactory of batteries. The

results showed that the health of the animals was harmed by the environmental pollution of the industrial products (liquids and gases) incorporated to the pasture and water fountains.
