1. 3 years later, another event happened in the Cold War, the Brazilian Coup d’etat of 1964 2. In the 1960s the world context was of extreme conflicts as the US and the USSR were struggling for influence over countries. As you can see, South America had a major American influence. The USSR saw in Brazil a opportunity of staring a wave of socialism in the continent 3. In 1960 Janio Quadros was the brazilian president. The economy was not good with debts and inflation.Our internal politics was very authotitarian and conservative and in the external politics Janio had relations with the USSR 4. With the pressure from his authotitarian approach and economic crisis, Janio Quadros renounced his position and his vice president, Joao Goulart became president 5. The new president was considered as a leftist by the conservative elite that held huge power. He planned decreasing social differences and reforming the agriculture the banks the elections and also education 6. In an effort to make the government more libertary so that the elite could prevail a referendum was made to decide about the political structure and the parliamentarism was adopted. On the 31st of March happened the “Marcha da família com deus pela liberdade”that was organized by the elite, the conservative clergy, the press and companies. It gathered 500 thounds of people and it was a response to Goulart’s social measures.
