Multiple Intelligences1) How did the method originate?
The term multiple intelligences was developed by a psychologist, Howard Gardener in 1983. He believes there are seven types of intelligences. Each human being has one or more of these intelligences, that can be worked on for further development. Each person has a preferred intelligence that can be used to make learning easier.
2)What beliefs underlie the method?
Howard Gardener´s multiple intelligences theory came to challenge traditional beliefs that a persons intelligence could only be measured and based on the traditional IQ tests. Gardener believed there was more to human intelligence than your basic IQ test. Gardener believed a person coul have one or more than one intelligence to be developed and taken advantage of.
3)What does the method look like in class?
A good teacher should always consider this method in the classroom. Firstly, getting to know the class and their preferred ways of learning. Then, when teaching, bringing for one theme, for example, various activities to fit the students preferred learning styles. They will all be studying the same theme, but learning recieving the input according to their preferred learning styles.
4)How might the method be suitable for children aged 6-11?
As the teacher´s aim is to help each and every individual achieve learning, the various activities held in the classroom, based on each individual´s learning style, helps children keep interested and learning in an active way makes learning easier. At this age children are curious and willing to learn.
5)How might the method be unsuitable for children aged 6-11?
It might be quite difficult for a teacher to address all the seven types of intelligences for a class of 24 students, for example. The teacher may only be able to work on the most dominant three intelligences, which will not be beneficial for the other students.
