RESUMO: O presente trabalho tem por objetivo apreender as idéias preconizadas por
Veblen em “A Teoria da Classe Ociosa” e pensar sua aplicabilidade em estudos que envolvem esporte e lazer na atual sociedade de consumo. Para tanto, reproduzimos e analisamos a obra enfatizando o que o autor nos diz sobre a natureza e o comportamento humano, sobre o consumo, sobre o esporte e o lazer. Na atualidade, além dos limites da racionalidade instrumental e da importância dos hábitos, as contribuições veblenianas que nos parecem mais importantes dizem respeito às relações entre cultura e a racionalidade. Pesquisas nesse sentido permitirão o desvendamento das motivações dos agentes quanto à sua conduta como consumidores do esporte e do lazer, em todas as formas como se manifestam tais fenômenos em nossa sociedade.

THE THEORY OF THE LEISURE CLASS: VEBLEN’S IDEAS ABOUT
NATURE AND HUMAN BEHAVIOR, CONSUMPTION, SPORTS AND
LEISURE
ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study is to understand the ideas defended by
Veblen in “The Theory of the Leisure Class” in order to think about their applicability on studies about sports and leisure inside the present consumption society. Veblen’s ideas about nature and human behavior and also about consumption, sports and leisure are analyzed and reproduced in this study. Beyond the limits of instrumental rationality and the importance of the habits, the most important Veblen’s contributions are the ones about the relations between culture and rationality. Researches about this issue may allow the discovery of the agents
